Can education liberate?

I've heard many times that, Knowledge is Power.
Paulo Freire (1996) in his book, Pedagogy of Freedom, states that "to teach is not to transfer knowledge but to create the possibilities for the production or construction of knowledge". Also, that "it's in making decisions that we learn to decide". As you reflect on Freire's words, do you think education can liberate? If yes, from what and how. Prof. Lopez

The Method of Currere: A process of self-discovery

Pinar (1975) wrote The Method of Currere, a method that allows us to explore what we have conceptualized through time, the complex relation between the temporal and conceptual, thus we can discover our self, its evolution and education (p. 19). After reading, The Method of Currere (Pinar,1975) reflect on the stages and discuss what the process let you discover.

Defining Praxis

In our last class we were discussing what is praxis. Paulo Freire (1986) defines praxis in Pedagogy of the Oppressed as "reflection and action upon the world in order to transform it." Through praxis, oppressed people can acquire a critical awareness of their own condition, and, with their allies, struggle for liberation. What do you understand praxis to be? How will this affect your future practice as teachers? Be sure to watch the included video before posting. Prof. Lopez

DEPR Teacher Profile

After having read the Teacher Profile (Perfil del Maestro) published by the Department of Education of Puerto Rico, the PPM-UPRAg Conceptual Framework and other sources of information, what do you believe is the role of the teacher? What are the essential traits every teacher should display? How will you endeavor to display these in your future practice? Remember to post your initial comment and to comment to at least two other comments by your peers.   -Prof. Arlinda Lopez

Teaching is one of the oldest professions around.  As future educator you are now creating your own vision on what a teacher needs to be in the classroom, the school community and the community as a whole.  After reading, discussing and reflecting on what a teacher profile should include and model, what do you believe is essential for teachers within this 21st century to be?  What should educators within this time model for future generations?
