The video Teaching in the 21st Century is short, simple and touching. It begins showing what goes through a student’s mind with the traditional teacher. This reminded me of a situation back in fourth grade, where the teacher would just want us to answer every time. If we were to ask a question, the teacher would tell us she was there to hear our answers and if we were right or wrong. We all go to school to learn. How do you learn without asking questions? Like the video said, the spark of curiosity is the start of the learning process. During these times, I believe that our duties as educators aren’t merely teach, repeat, assess, evaluate and so on. Our students teach us also. It is essential to get to know what they like and how they think in order for us to cause an effective impact in their learning. I believe we have an advantage compared to the traditional teachers which is technology. There is no excuse to not make learning innovative. The current and future generations are all about technology. Educators should model and promote the use of it in collaborations and project based learning. Future educators should also model critical thinking which students can take to the outside world that is full of many possibilities. The video overall was truly inspiring and it reminded me of my favorite education quote by Malcolm X. “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare it for today”.
