DEPR Teacher Profile
After having read the Teacher Profile (Perfil del Maestro) published by the Department of Education of Puerto Rico, the PPM-UPRAg Conceptual Framework and other sources of information, what do you believe is the role of the teacher? What are the essential traits every teacher should display? How will you endeavor to display these in your future practice? Remember to post your initial comment and to comment to at least two other comments by your peers. -Prof. Arlinda Lopez

The role of a teacher is mainly about creating a change (influencing) a student’s life. As they impact a student’s life, they become a transforming teacher. I believe that the role of a teacher is very important because the other professions would not exist without one. A teacher’s trait is very crucial. It will be something you will be remembered as forever. The main trait for a teacher is being knowledgeable. A teacher with no knowledge on the current topic being discussed will be lost, confused and have a bad experience in the classroom. I also believe that all teachers should have a positive attitude. This is very essential because as we know, we set the mood in our classroom. Our students are sponges who absorb everything around them, specially teaching teens in the secondary level. Lastly, being reflective is also a very important trait for an educator. Teachers must reflect daily and think about the students, understanding that everyone learns differently. As for displaying these traits in my future practice, I will always do my best to continue attending workshops, conferences and learning more about this field. We must be up to date with the latest techniques, practices and on what interests our students. In addition, with these we can promote diversity and fairness in the classroom. The final goal is to create a learning community to help one another, where everyone feels comfortable and achieve a rich learning experience.

The role of the teacher is to improve the lives of students in measurable and desirable ways by modeling an authentic enthusiasm for learning and guiding students to understand their own personal learning style be active participants in the very same. Every teacher must be have a deep desire to help others as well as be creative since teaching will often err more on the side of art than science. Additionally it is important to think logically and objectively, be socially and politically conscious and be pan-sophistic in one's personal knowledge of the world. During my practice I'll strive to be a self reflective teacher, using all the methods, technologies and strategies at my disposal to help students achieve to their fullest potential in the context of the curriculum and standards of the DEPR.
ResponderBorrarTo me a teacher is a guide, a provider and a mentor to his/her students. Teachers aren’t meant to be dictators who have the answer to everything, teachers should always provide the necessary tools and let their students build their skillset with what has been provided for them. In my eyes every teacher should be fair, honest, responsible, caring and dedicated. I will endeavor to display these traits by treating students fairly, everyone has a chance to succeed and shine. I will do my best to provide students with the necessary tools that they need to acquire helpful skills for life and to be there whenever they need help or guidance to the best of my abilities.

The role of a teacher is to be a guide for students learning, a creator of new ideas and a mentor. Teachers should posses traits that allow them to implement fairness, a dynamic class, as well as organized learning structure. As a future teacher I would create a dynamic class that would include most learning styles. I would also discuss a weekly learning schedule, to help students understand what are the task for the week and help me keep track of what has to be covered. -Amaris Rodriguez
ResponderBorrarI believe the role of the teacher is to help students apply concepts during the learning process. Teachers are what facilitate the learning process in each and every one of us. To achieve a successful classroom environment I believe a teacher should be a facilitator, mentor, leader, role model, learner, and most of all visionaries. They should also project availability and be trustworthy, caring, understanding, responsible, organized, and prepared. In the future when I become a teacher I will work hard to display all of the mentioned characteristics by keeping myself organized and passionate about this profession. If I love what I am doing this will all come naturally and my future students will obtain the richest education.
ResponderBorrarThe Teacher Profile and the Conceptual Framework expect nothing less than professionalism, dedication and commitment from all future teachers. I think that these principles are to be expected of anyone devoted to their profession. It is not only about being knowledgeable in your given subject, though that is of course imperative. As a future teacher I think that it is important to show commitment and love for our vocation. It is through our passion for teaching that we can transmit, not only our pride in our craft, but also our love for learning. This is important because the students will be able to see it and, hopefully, mimic it. We are expected to be outstanding role models for our students and the rest of our community, which is only natural when they are entrusting us with their future. Thus, to be role models, we must portray good values, an ethical behavior, a respectful attitude towards all people, and an active thirst for knowledge. This last one is especially important, we must always be searching for new content, new techniques, new strategies, new resources, new ways of motivating our students, and new ways to encourage them to read. We cannot simply ask or demand certain conducts from our students. We must speak through our actions and become good examples for them.

According to the sources we have read concerning the preparation and professional formation of teachers, I believe that these are guides and role models. They facilitate the students with the information and knowledge they need to respond to our society’s needs, set their professional future goals, and, once they complete in doing so, help to get our nation moving forward. In order to respond to the differences and needs of these and the generations of the future, teachers must stay up-to-date with the constant changes occurring in the present and those to come in a near future. Teachers should be ethical, promote moral values, and show fairness. Among these essential traits, what I believe to be the basis of every vocational teacher, is that they should be committed in every aspect, with the students, their learning, parents, school faculty, and the community. As a future educator, I plan to apply these aspects by grasping the knowledge I received in my teacher preparation courses, keep improving in everything I do, and form myself every day in order to excel in my task.
