Can education liberate?

I've heard many times that, Knowledge is Power.
Paulo Freire (1996) in his book, Pedagogy of Freedom, states that "to teach is not to transfer knowledge but to create the possibilities for the production or construction of knowledge". Also, that "it's in making decisions that we learn to decide". As you reflect on Freire's words, do you think education can liberate? If yes, from what and how. Prof. Lopez

  1. Education can liberate and it is for this very reason that schools seem to more as a filter that marginalizes those who've been deliberately placed at a disadvantage. True education would elevate all people and empower all people equally but as it was discussed in class, the existence of welfare culture and conformism at the very "bottom" of society is proof enough that true education is far from widespread. True education would free us from this social apathy, see all people of all walks of life intimately familiarized with the arts. Education liberates because it allows us to see macroscopically, to interact and connect, to grow rather than being cogs in a machine, toiling for wages while never truly acknowledging our own desire for creation and connection. Education liberates us from the powers that be, whoever they be by casting them in the light and seeing their true faces and their true intentions.

  2. I agree with Freire’s words about not transferring knowledge to students. A school is not a factory and young lives are not robots. Young lives are active learners. The idea is that teachers will serve as guides in the students’ learning process instead of having an authoritarian view. In my opinion, education does indeed liberate. It liberates you from being biased and free of any unethical judgments.
A good education makes you think critically or as I like to call it, thinking outside the box. By doing this it sets you free from ignorance. Through knowledge a person can defend itself from any situation. People living in an oppressed society will be able see the disadvantages and advantages thanks to education. Education will make them see all the diverse possibilities so they can take their own path in life. The process of education liberating us is something extremely eye opening. When education liberates, you will see that there is no such thing as a limit in education. Does this come easy? No. We must work hard in life and grow intellectually Education will free society from the oppressors for a better tomorrow. I also believe that if we want to be entirely free, we must be aware that we are continuously learning.

  3. I, personally, think education liberates in many aspects of life. I’ve always believed that with knowledge come opportunities, if one knows how to use what we’ve learned. Without education there is no future and in order to be a productive member of society we must acquire knowledge; and not just in whichever field we wish to have a career in, but also with general information (politics, economy, etc). The more educated our society is, the better it will function. We need well educated professionals in every field, why? Because doctors are needed, lawyers are needed, teachers are needed, etc. What would we do if our professionals weren’t equipped with the knowledge necessary for them to excel at what they do? I see education as a never ending cycle, we will always acquire more and more knowledge as we go through life and what we learn we pass on to those we know. Thus the cycle continues, passing on information to help and inspire others towards a more independent mindset and to search for answers and for more knowledge on their own.
